Street Fighter Alpha 3: the different versions
Alpha 3 was revised and ported many times. Playable roster, bosses, and bonus fighters are not identical across releases. Here is a high-level view by version (focusing on character-related differences).
Original arcade (1998)
The baseline build—most restrictive for selectable fighters.
- Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison appear primarily as bosses—not part of the normal playable roster.
- Playable access may exist in some setups (codes, debug), but that is not the standard player experience.
- Juni and Juli: appear as NPCs / Bison’s aides, not playable.
PlayStation (PS1)
A large content expansion compared with the first arcade release.
- The four bosses (Balrog, Vega, Sagat, M. Bison) become playable, often through progression or codes.
- Juni and Juli: playable after unlocking (often treated as hidden characters).
Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper (revised arcade)
An arcade update, commonly linked to the Japanese market.
- Bosses already in the game are officially made playable.
- Juni and Juli: playable.
Dreamcast
A home port closely aligned with the Upper-era layout.
- Bosses playable, in line with the “complete” Upper-style experience.
- Juni and Juli: playable.
Game Boy Advance (Alpha 3 Upper)
A handheld release with a surprisingly wide cast.
- Notable additions: Eagle, Maki, and Yun.
- Juni and Juli: playable, consistent with Upper-line releases.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX (PSP)
The most content-rich portable compilation.
- Ingrid as a major bonus fighter.
- Eagle, Maki, Yun, and the full boss set: this is the build with the broadest playable roster.
- Juni and Juli: included in this maximal lineup.
